Clearwire is locked into WiMAX — and barred from deploying LTE — until late 2011 under terms of a deal with its biggest investor, Intel. The pact, which was outlined in Clearwire’s most recent 10-Q filing with the SEC and first reported by Unstrung, restricts Clearwire from offering any non-WiMAX technology through Nov. 28, 2011. But that’s not the only roadblock preventing the beleaguered company from pursuing LTE: Clearwire said it would rack up significant costs if it opted to deploy other technologies, even if those alternative technologies “would be technologically superior or more cost effective” than WiMAX.   MORE >

Wireless competition is heating up in Philadelphia. Clearwire Corp., which is partially owned by Sprint Nextel Corp. and cable giant Comcast Corp., flipped the switch last week on its 4G WiMAX service in Center City.    MORE >

Mobile Citizen, a provider of broadband for education and non-profits, has announced that it is offering $10 per month WiMAX subscriptions to schools and non-profits in Portland, Las Vegas, Chicago and Philadelphia. Mobile Citizen is the first service provider in the US to offer WiMAX access exclusively to educational institutions and non-profits. They are reselling Clearwire’s WiMAX service.   MORE >

Alvarion and Italian telecommunications company Linkem today announced that they will provide wireless broadband coverage for the 13th annual world swimming championship in Rome from July 17th through August 2nd. Linkem was recently selected to create a wireless network using WiMAX and Wi-Fi technologies in both the indoor and outdoor areas of Rome’s Olympic Village.   MORE >

The WiMAX Forum announced today that it has begun testing 2.3 GHz Mobile WiMAX products in the 5, 10 and 8.75 MHz channels for certification. The WiMAX Forum expects the first group of 2.3 GHz products to be WiMAX Forum Certified by Q4 2009. The testing for this group of 2.3 GHz products was initiated earlier than expected.   MORE >

Augere Wireless Broadband launched WiMAX at the Westin Dhaka in Bangladesh on Tuesday, July 21. The 2.3GHz internet services will be available on trial in the Gulshan and Banani areas of the Dhaka district reports TeleGeography. China’s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT), is readying the launch of WiMAX technology in China. The entry of China into the WiMAX sphere could catapult the market with new investment worth some RMB100 million (US$16.4 billion). SARFT is looking to introduce WiMAX in 30 cities. While SARFT has denied the existence of such a plan, the denial could be an attempt to stall for time while the plan is finalised.   MORE >

The number of live HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) connections will pass 150 million globally this summer, the GSM Association said today, while WiMAX has just 3.5 million users, according to a report published by Marvedis this week, putting HSPA firmly ahead of other mobile broadband technologies.   MORE >
